Burj Khalifa: Tallest Building in the World

Burj Khalifa or “Khalifa Tower” is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and is presently the tallest construction in the world, at 829.84 m (2,723 ft). Before the building opened it was called Burj Dubai. Construction started in 2004. The building was opened on 4 January 2010. It is more than 300 meters taller than Taipei 101, the formerly tallest building. The tower’s construction and engineering were done by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill of Chicago, with Adrian Smith as chief architect, and Bill Baker as chief structural engineer. The primary contractor was Samsung C&T of South Korea.

The total cost for the scheme was about US$1.5 billion; and for the whole “Downtown Dubai” development, US$20 billion. The project’s conclusion concurred with the worldwide monetary disaster of 2007–2010, and with massive overbuilding in the country, led to high openings and foreclosures. With Dubai stuck in debt from its vast desires, the government was required to pursue multibillion dollar bailouts from its oil rich neighbor Abu Dhabi. Then, in a surprise move at its opening ceremony, the tower was renamed Burj Khalifa, said to honour the UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his crucial support.

The world’s tallest building is surrounded by hotels, must-visit shopping destinations and a world of entertainment options. Burj Khalifa Tower was designed as a “city in city” — with its own grasses, boulevards and parks. Burj Khalifa is a key element of the new business center in Dubai. The main aim of the magnificent Burj Khalifa Tower is to become a central pearl of the Dubai World Trade Center and inspire people to break limits on the way to new achievements. Dubai recently has detonated onto the world market as a top tourist and business destination, hence enticing to its shorelines thousands of visitors every day from every corner of the world. Burj Khalifa is one of the best places to visit in Dubai.
